A go-to-market plan for outbound
Outbound is one of the channels in a go-to-market plan. For a small team the discipline is the same as for any channel: decide who you are selling to, learn what makes them reply, and change one thing at a time.
Start with the buyer
Write down the ideal customer profile: sector, size, region and the problem. Then name the buyer role. A plan that says "mid-size firms" without a role cannot be executed, because nobody knows whom to write to.
Segment before you scale
Split the target into segments that share a problem, for example boutique law firms opening a second office. Each segment gets its own opening line and its own reason to care. A message written for everyone persuades no one.
Use trigger events
A trigger is the answer to "why now". If the research finds none, say so and open on a checkable detail about what the company does. Do not invent urgency.
- Funding, an acquisition or a new office.
- A named senior hire, or a job advert that shows what they are investing in.
- A product or service launch, a filing or a published position.
Run it as an experiment
- Pick one segment and one message.
- Send to a batch small enough to verify every address.
- Record replies, positive replies and bounces.
- Change one variable, such as the subject, the first line or the question, and send the next batch.
- Keep what works and drop what does not.
Hand over cleanly
A reply is the start of a sales conversation, not the end of outbound. Agree who answers, how quickly, and what gets logged. Replies to outbound are not always recorded automatically, so decide where a human notes them.
